Mike began playing the trombone aged 10 and soon after began attending the Guildhall School of Music junior dept until, at 18, he left to continue his studies at City University, London. During his time there he became a member of Jools Holland’s big band and continued this association for 8 years, touring the U.K. and Europe and making regular TV appearances with the band. Around this time Mike also began his long association as the trombonist in cult contemporary composer Steve Martland’s band as well as appearing on albums by the likes of Drugstore, Paul Oakenfold, Delicatessen and Tindersticks.
In 1997 Mike began working with alternative Finnish artist Jimi Tenor, first as trombonist, then as arranger and orchestrator on his seminal space-extravaganza “Out of Nowhere”. During the following years Mike conducted several performances of the work in concert halls from the Barbican, London to Cirque Royale, Brussels and was invited as a guest conductor at the Schleswig-Holstein International music festival.
Mike continued touring and recording with Jimi Tenor up until 2001 and during that period also appeared on albums by artists such as Red Snapper, Madness, Embrace and Radiohead, appearing on their 2000 album “Kid A”. He also performed live with Radiohead on several occasions including “Saturday Night Live” and at Roseland Ballroom, New York. It was during this time that Mike began working with the Spike & the SAS Band
In addition to his performing commitments Mike continued to work as an arranger/orchestrator and conductor and in 2002 was invited to work with Barry Adamson on the soundtrack for “Le Raid”, an action comedy for Canal+. This followed arranging work on Barry’s album “The King of Nothing Hill”.
In recent years Mike has busied himself touring and recording regularly with Amy Winehouse, Basement Jaxx and Madness as well as recording and performing with Lemar, David Grey, Ray LaMontagne, Mark Ronson, Orson, Paul McCartney, Divine Comedy, The Raconteurs, Dizzee Rascal, Groove Armada & Girls Aloud.
