I first came to London from Dover with my two brothers – Pete (drums) and Gary (sax)– in the mid-seventies, just as Punk was starting. The band I was in was called Fury, whose drummer – Topper Headon – was my best friend from Dover. Topper left the band to join the Clash, fully embracing the Punk scene, something which I couldn’t bring myself to do.
For me there was lots of touring work around the U.K supporting major acts until I got my first headline tour playing with Rick Wakeman. This was a stepping stone and raised my profile in the music industry and lead to work with many people, the most well known of whom are Tina Turner, Pete Townshend, Debbie Harry, Fish, Roger Taylor and Queen (post-Freddie).
My last tour was in November 2006 with the reformed Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, with Phill Jupitus and Adrian Edmondson filling the shoes of the late Vivian Stanshall. The drummer on this tour was the fabulous Johnny Marter, a very dear friend! We are waiting to see if some recording work and further touring will materialise this year for the Band. if you get the chance to see the Bonzos, I guarantee you’ll leave with a smile on your face!
I also gig regularly with a band called The Mods, which features Johnny Marter when he’s available and occasionally Spike, so if you get the chance please come and feel free to check us out. |
