 |
Johny Marter started his musical career in 1972 as the drummer of a local Oxford band Steam Roller and doing BBC Radio Rock Sessions with Roy Young.
In 1957 he was asked to join Mr. Big for 3 studio albums and a recording with Ian Hunter. Various tours followed, supporting Queen, Tom Petty and Journey.
From 1979-1982 Johnny joined Voyager for several studio albums and various live shows sharing billing with Meatloaf, Status Quo, Barclay James Harvest and the Ian Gillan Band. A tour supporting ELO followed, as well as sessions with Gus Dugeon and the Elton John Band.
The years from 1982-1986 brought 2 studio albums and numerous television and live shows with Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake) and Alaska, followed by sessions with Leo Lyons (Ten Years After), Phil Wainman, Nick Tauber, Bobby Kimbal (Toto) and again Gus Dugeon, and gigs with Adrian Smith Auto Project (ASAP) and Dave Murray (Iron Maiden). During this period Johnny also joined MGM (Neil Murray, Bernie Marsden, Don Airey and Mel Gallery) for performances at Knebworth and the Milton Keynes Bowl as well as numerous European festivals supporting Deep Purple and Blue Oyster Cult.
From 1983, Johnny joined Marillion to support Black Sabbath at Reading Rock and for various live dates in America, as well as a number of studio sessions. Then in 1989 he worked with Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy) on several solo projects before joining The Frankie Miller Band for British and European tours.
Johnny’s work with Spike Edney (Queen) began in 1992 when he produced and engineered an album for Ian Duck’s band the Rhino Men. Since the late 90’s he has continued to work with Spike and his all-star band (The SAS Band), when he took over on drums from Cozy Powell. Performances with The SAS Band has including working around the world with such artists as Kiki Dee, Brian May, Roger Taylor, Paul Rodgers, Chaka Khan, Peter Gabriel, Paul Young, Bob Geldof, Chris Thompson, Stevie Vann Lange and Tony Hadley, to name a few. Johnny also joined The SAS Band for the 2005 Nelson Mandela Concert for Aids in Tromso, Norway as drummer of the house band backing Brian May, Annie Lennox, Sharon Corr, Zuchero and Peter Gabriel.
In between SAS Band commitments, Johnny toured Europe and South America from 2001-2002 with Fish (Marillion) and in 2006 joined The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band for their 40th Anniversary UK tour featuring special guests Phil Jupitus, Adrian Edmonson, Bill Bailey and Paul Merton. Early 2007 saw Johnny join Spike Edeny, Jamie Moses and Neil Murray for the 1st ever Classics in Rock show in Rotterdam, featuring a full orchestra and rock legends Glen Hughes, John Waite, Graham Bonnet and Jon Anderson.
